Combine closed financial statements, working-capital and cash views, a few operating measures, variance commentary and a short action list.
A trend is more useful than one isolated monthly number
Illustrative gross-margin trend compared with the working target used in a monthly review.
Illustrative example. The discussion should explain the movement, the reason and the action behind the percentage.
A concise monthly MIS pack
| Section | Question answered | Typical follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| P&L and balance sheet | What changed this month? | Review material movements |
| Margin view | Which work created value? | Review price, cost and mix |
| Ageing and cash | Where is cash tied up? | Assign collection actions |
| Forecast | What could change next? | Update assumptions and decisions |
Supporting schedules remain available separately. Management does not need every control working in the main pack.
01
Start with the decisions
Before building a dashboard, agree what management needs to decide each month. Are margins changing? Are collections slowing? Can the business hire? Which projects or clients need attention?
Then select the measures and views that answer those questions using reliable data.
02
A focused five-part pack
For many service businesses, the core monthly pack can remain concise.
- Closed P&L and balance sheet with comparable periods
- Revenue and margin views relevant to the operating model
- Receivables, payables and collection concentration
- Cash position, commitments and a short forward view
- Material variance commentary and an action list
03
Explain the reason and the action
‘Travel was above budget’ only repeats the table. Useful commentary states the amount, the business reason, whether it may recur, who owns the response and whether the forecast should change.
Not every variance needs a comment. Set a materiality level so management focuses on the issues that can affect a decision.
04
Remove what is not useful
Remove measures that have no owner, cannot be produced reliably, duplicate another page or never affect the discussion. A monthly pack should become more focused over time, not longer every quarter.
Keep detailed reconciliations and schedules as supporting records, but do not fill the management pack with control workings.
